What Medicare Advantage plans are available in Prescott and Flagstaff, Arizona for 2027?
Northern Arizona is where the 2027 plan exits actually bite. Yavapai County goes from five carriers to three, Coconino from six to three and Mohave from four to two, with about 5,100 people in general plans that will not be sold where they live next year. Here is who is left in Prescott, Flagstaff and Lake Havasu, what the continuing plans changed, and what it means for a Peoria household with a summer place up the hill.
Three carriers sell a general Medicare Advantage plan in Prescott and in Flagstaff for 2027 — Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Devoted Health — where there were five and six this year. Yavapai County has 16 general plans with drug coverage, Coconino has nine, and Mohave County, around Lake Havasu and Kingman, has nine from two carriers. Aetna and Wellcare no longer sell a general plan in any of the three, and about 5,100 people were in general plans that will not be sold where they live on January 1. Their Medicare is not ending. Their plan is, and they have three dates to work with.
I am writing this from the Valley side of the hill, because that is where I get the question. A Peoria household in Vistancia or Blackstone has a place in Prescott or Munds Park and wants to know whether the plan works up there. A parent in Prescott Valley or Kingman has a letter dated October 2 and a son or daughter in 85383 trying to read it. And a fair number of north-country retirees come down I-17 for a specialist at Arrowhead or in Sun City. The Maricopa County list barely moved for 2027: 46 general plans became 45, from the same thirteen carriers. North of the county line it is a different story.
Who sells Medicare Advantage in northern Arizona for 2027
These are general plans with drug coverage — not Special Needs Plans, and not the no-drug plans built for people with VA or TRICARE prescriptions. The count comes from the CMS landscape files for both years.

"General" means contract category MA-PD with the Special Needs Plan indicator set to No. A $0 plan premium is not the same as no cost: the Part B premium still applies, and so do the plan's copays up to its cap.
Yavapai’s plan count held up only because Devoted Health added three HMOs there and in Coconino. Mohave got nothing new. And in Coconino the single Humana plan with drug coverage is a regional PPO whose premium moves from $37 to $110 a month, so in practice a Flagstaff shopper who wants a $0 plan is choosing between two carriers.
The same pattern runs across the rest of the high country. Navajo County, which is Show Low and Pinetop-Lakeside, has five general plans from two carriers for 2027. Gila County, which is Payson, has six from three.
Which plans are gone
Four general plans account for nearly all of it. Two ended everywhere. The other two still exist in other Arizona counties and simply stopped serving these.
| 2026 plan | Contract | 2026 premium / cap | Sept 2026 members: Yavapai / Coconino / Mohave | 2027 |

That is roughly 2,280 general-plan members in Yavapai, 915 in Coconino and 1,900 in Mohave. None of this is a judgment on the plans or the people in them. Carriers redrew their maps across the country for 2027, and thinly populated counties with long drives between hospitals are where the lines moved.
One detail matters to Flagstaff in particular. The two plans with a $3,000 cap both left Coconino, so the lowest in-network cap on the county’s general menu goes from $3,000 to $6,050.
What changed on the plans that stayed
Most people up north are in a plan that continues, so their mail is an Annual Notice of Change, not a non-renewal letter. Worth reading anyway:
- AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC AZ-0010 (PPO), the largest general plan in Yavapai and Coconino with about 7,300 members between them, stays at $0. Its in-network cap rises from $6,700 to $7,150.
- AARP Medicare Advantage from UHC AZ-0008 (PPO) goes from $45 to $64 a month, and its cap from $5,900 to $7,150.
- Humana Gold Plus H0028-024 (HMO), with more than 15,000 members in Mohave County, stays at $0 with a cap of $5,400, up from $4,900.
- Humana Gold Plus H0028-062 (HMO) in Yavapai stays at $0; the cap goes from $4,900 to $5,999.
- HumanaChoice R7220-002 (Regional PPO) goes from $37 to $110 a month.
The 2027 Star Ratings came out October 8. Humana’s Gold Plus HMO contract and the contract carrying Devoted’s three new HMOs are at 4.5 stars, the UnitedHealthcare and HumanaChoice PPO contracts are at 4, Devoted’s PPO contract is at 3.5, and Humana’s regional PPO is at 3. Ratings are given to a whole contract, often across several states, and they measure things like screenings and call-center performance. They do not tell you whether your cardiologist is in network. The Arizona star-ratings rundown explains how far to trust them.
If your plan left: three doors, three dates
A plan that ends and a plan that stops serving your county give you the same rights.
Another Medicare Advantage plan. Annual Enrollment runs October 15 to December 7 and is the only window with a clean January 1 start. After that, a special period for non-renewed plans runs December 8 through February 28, 2027, with coverage starting the first of the month after you enroll and Original Medicare in between. With two or three carriers on the menu, the comparison is short, and it should start with your doctors and the nearest hospital, not the premium.
Original Medicare with a Medicare Supplement and a Part D plan. From November 1, 2026 through March 4, 2027 a supplement carrier must issue you Plan A, B, D, G, K or L with no health questions. Arizona has no birthday rule and no yearly Medigap window, so for anyone past their first year this is the exception, not the norm. In a county with two carriers and an hour’s drive to a specialist, a card that works with any doctor who takes Medicare is worth pricing. Plan G against Plan N is the next read, and every Part D plan carries the 2027 out-of-pocket cap.
Doing nothing. On January 1 you are in Original Medicare with no drug plan and no annual cap, and after 63 days without creditable drug coverage a permanent Part D penalty begins. It is only a plan if the supplement and drug plan are already arranged.
What to do when your plan is discontinued walks the calendar week by week.
If you live in Peoria and summer up north
Your plan follows your permanent address, the one Social Security has on file. A cabin in Prescott or Flagstaff does not give you Yavapai’s or Coconino’s menu, and it never did, so nothing on the lists above ends your Maricopa plan. What changes is the reasoning some households used to choose it.
- An HMO covers emergencies and urgently needed care anywhere. Routine care is another matter. A Valley HMO’s network is built around the Valley, and a follow-up visit in Prescott may not be covered at all.
- A PPO pays out of network at a higher cost share, with any provider willing to bill it. If you spend June through September at 7,000 feet, that is the feature you are buying, and it is worth checking what the out-of-network cap is, since it is separate from the in-network one and higher.
- A carrier name is not a network. If you chose Aetna or Wellcare partly because the same name was sold up the hill, it no longer is. Even where a carrier sells in both counties, the Maricopa plan and the Yavapai plan are different plans with different provider lists.
- Six months is the line. A plan must disenroll a member who is outside its service area for more than six consecutive months, unless it has a visitor or travel benefit that extends that. Summer people rarely get close. Households drifting toward living up north full time should notice when the cabin has quietly become the permanent address.
That last case cuts the other way too. If you move your permanent address from Prescott down to Peoria, the move itself opens a special enrollment period and you go from three carriers to thirteen. Changing Medicare when you move covers the timing, and using a plan away from home covers the travel rules in full. There is also a local wrinkle: Peoria’s city limits run north past Lake Pleasant into Yavapai County, and which county your address is in decides which list you shop from.
If the months away are the real driver, it is the supplement door again. Original Medicare does not care which county you are standing in.
The short version
- Prescott and Flagstaff each have three Medicare Advantage carriers for 2027: Humana, UnitedHealthcare and Devoted Health. Lake Havasu and Kingman have two.
- Aetna and Wellcare no longer sell a general plan in Yavapai, Coconino or Mohave. About 5,100 general-plan members are affected across the three.
- In Coconino the lowest in-network cap goes from $3,000 to $6,050, and the largest continuing PPO up north raises its cap to $7,150.
- If your plan left, the Medigap door is open November 1 to March 4 with no health questions. In Arizona there is no other routine way around underwriting.
- A Peoria plan is still a Peoria plan in Prescott. Emergencies are covered anywhere; routine care up north depends on whether you hold an HMO or a PPO.
If you would rather have someone check it for you
Bring the letter, your cards and the pill bottles, and I will run your doctors against the 2027 networks for the county you live in, and price the supplement door beside them. It takes about half an hour and there is no charge for the conversation. I am independent, so the answer can be any plan on the county list or none of them.
Most of my work is with households in Peoria and the north Valley, and Arizona is one license, so the parent in Prescott Valley and the summer place in Flagstaff are part of the same conversation. The office is in Anthem, right on I-17, and nearly all of this gets done by phone. Call (602) 844-6002 or book a time — and if you call or text, that is your consent for me to reply the same way.
Common questions
What Medicare Advantage plans are available in Prescott, AZ for 2027?
Prescott is in Yavapai County, which has 16 general Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage for 2027 from three carriers — seven from Humana, six from Devoted Health and three from UnitedHealthcare. Eleven of the sixteen have a $0 monthly plan premium, and in-network annual caps run from $4,150 to $9,450. That is one fewer plan and two fewer carriers than 2026, because Aetna and Wellcare no longer sell a general plan in the county. You still pay the Part B premium on any of them.
Is Aetna Medicare Advantage leaving Yavapai County?
Yes, for general plans. Aetna Medicare Signature (HMO), contract H4835-002, was Aetna's one general plan in Yavapai, Coconino and Mohave counties in 2026 and is not sold in any of the three for 2027. The plan itself continues in Maricopa, Pima and Pinal counties, so this is a service-area reduction rather than a plan ending everywhere, but for a member in Prescott, Flagstaff or Kingman the result is the same — coverage under it ends December 31, 2026.
Can I use my Phoenix Medicare Advantage plan in Prescott or Flagstaff?
For emergencies and urgently needed care, yes, anywhere in the country. For routine care it depends on the plan. An HMO generally pays for routine care only inside its own network, and a Maricopa County HMO's network is built around the Valley. A PPO pays out of network at a higher cost share, with any doctor who accepts the plan's terms. A second home does not let you enroll in that county's plans, since your plan is tied to your permanent address.
What happens if my Medicare Advantage plan leaves my county?
Your coverage under that plan ends December 31. Your Medicare does not end. You get a non-renewal letter dated by October 2 and you can choose another Medicare Advantage plan sold in your county, or Original Medicare with a Part D plan and, if you want one, a Medicare Supplement. You have Annual Enrollment, October 15 to December 7, and then a special period from December 8 through February 28, 2027. If you do nothing you are in Original Medicare on January 1 with no drug plan.
Can I get a Medicare Supplement without health questions if my plan left my county?
Yes. A plan ending or leaving your area is a federal guaranteed-issue situation. You can apply from 60 days before coverage ends to 63 days after, which for a December 31 ending is November 1, 2026 through March 4, 2027. Federal law guarantees Plans A, B, D, G, K and L, plus C and F if you were eligible for Medicare before 2020. Arizona has no birthday rule and no annual Medigap window, so for most people this is the one way around underwriting.
How many Medicare Advantage carriers are in Flagstaff for 2027?
Three. Coconino County has nine general Medicare Advantage plans with drug coverage for 2027 — six from Devoted Health, two from UnitedHealthcare and one from Humana. In 2026 it had eleven plans from six carriers; Aetna, Wellcare and Wellpoint no longer sell a general plan there. The lowest in-network annual cap in the county rises from $3,000 to $6,050.
